Hydration Is More Than Just Water
When you sweat, you lose more than water. You also lose electrolytes—minerals such as sodium, chloride, potassium, magnesium, and calcium that play important roles throughout the body.
Replacing fluids and electrolytes is part of the equation. But there’s another piece of hydration science that often gets overlooked: glucose.
The Sodium-Glucose Connection
In the small intestine, a transport protein called SGLT1 (sodium-glucose cotransporter 1) moves sodium and glucose together into intestinal cells. Water follows this absorption process, which is one of the reasons glucose and sodium have long been used together in oral rehydration formulations.
That doesn't mean an electrolyte drink needs to be loaded with sugar. It means glucose can serve a specific functional purpose when used thoughtfully alongside sodium.
Why Peak Uses Glucose
Peak Hydration contains 3 g of certified organic tapioca glucose per stick. We didn't add glucose simply to make the drink sweet. It's an intentional part of the hydration formula.
Peak pairs glucose with 535 mg of sodium and 1,770 mg of total electrolytes per stick. Rather than eliminating glucose to make a sugar-free product—or relying on larger amounts of common sugars—we use a measured amount of pure glucose as part of our carefully designed glucose-to-sodium balance.
Not All Sugar Is the Same
Table sugar, or sucrose, is composed of approximately equal parts glucose and fructose. Glucose directly participates in the SGLT1 sodium-glucose transport pathway; fructose is absorbed through a different intestinal pathway.
That's one reason Peak uses pure organic tapioca glucose rather than sucrose. It allows us to include the specific carbohydrate we're looking for without adding fructose along with it.
More Sugar Isn't Better
The goal isn't to add as much sugar as possible. Peak was developed to provide a measured amount of glucose while keeping the overall formula focused on hydration.
It's part of the same approach behind the rest of Peak: substantial electrolytes, thoughtfully selected ingredients, certified organic ingredients, collagen peptides—and a refreshing flavor that doesn't taste overwhelmingly salty.
Hydration, Designed With Purpose
Peak Hydration was developed over more than five years of research, testing, and refinement. Every major component has a reason for being there.
The glucose is no exception.
